The First Congress of Serbian Glaucoma Specialists was held in the “Andjela” hotel on Kopaonik on 17th and 18th May 2013 in a cosy working and collegial atmosphere. The Congress brought together 350 ophthalmologists from this country and from the region (Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and from the Republic of Srpska). Apart from oral and poster presentations and professional courses and lectures given by guests from abroad, pharmaceutical companies also organized symposia.  The lectures given by our esteemed professors – Dobrosava Cvetković and Đorđe Kontić, dedicated to the history of ophthalmology and glaucoma in Serbia and to a complex problem of pseudo exfoliation syndrome were particularly noteworthy.

Educational courses on diagnosis of glaucoma, glaucoma surgery, and secondary glaucoma were held during the Congress. The topics of oral statements, organized in a well-planned presentation program were: diagnosis of glaucoma, primary glaucoma, hormonal treatment of glaucoma, secondary glaucoma, laser and surgical treatment of glaucoma. The presentations of practitioners’ own results were followed by constructive discussion and exchange of expert and scientific viewpoints, and thus the task of all Congress participants – to acquaint their colleagues with their viewpoints and achievements in the field of glaucoma – was successfully completed.

Regional interconnection is one of the primary objectives of the Serbian Glaucoma Society, so the participation of ophthalmologists from the region brought colleagues great satisfaction and contributed to the fact that the First Congress of Glaucoma Specialists of Serbia had an international character.

In addition to abundant scientific and professional aspect of the Congress, there was time for moments of respite and socialising in the gorgeous mountain setting, along with ideal weather conditions that the participants of the Congress had.

Finally, upon the successful completion of the First Congress of Glaucoma Specialists of Serbia, members of the Congress Organising Committee expressed their satisfaction and confidence that common good intentions, knowledge and hard work had produced a meeting that would remain in the memory of most participants.

With best regards for the members of the Serbian Glaucoma Society and other colleagues, we announced our next meeting at the Second Congress of Glaucoma Specialists of Serbia in 2015.
